Choose an appliance with a high energy label

An energy-efficient refrigerator, washing machine or dishwasher sometimes uses half the power of a less efficient model.

Description

What we find interesting: More than 30% of the energy bill goes to electricity consumption. So it's wise to choose energy-efficient household appliances.

Does an appliance need replacing? Then choose an appliance with energy label A or B; you can save tens of euros in electricity annually.

With appliances that are always on, such as refrigerators, the savings can be substantial.

3 more reasons to choose an energy-efficient appliance:
  • You lower your electricity bill: Especially with larger appliances, you'll notice this every year.
  • Better for the climate: Less electricity consumption means lower CO₂ emissions.
  • Better resistance to rising energy prices: The less electricity your appliance uses, the less you'll notice future price increases on your energy bill.

Steps

  1. 1
When purchasing, pay attention to the new EU energy label: A is the most efficient, G the least. Most appliances now fall into C or D.
  2. 2
Look beyond the purchase price: A more expensive, more economical appliance often pays for itself through lower energy bills
  3. 3
Check which appliances use the most energy: Think of old refrigerators, freezers, or dryers; they're often real power hogs. Sometimes it's worth replacing very old models with a more energy-efficient one.
  4. 4
Use the comparator from Milieu Centraal to find out more about energy labels of different appliances
  5. 5
Be aware of standby power consumption: Some older appliances consume a lot of power in standby mode. Turn them off completely.
