What we find interesting: Insects are incredibly important to nature. They pollinate flowers and crops, clean up dead material, and provide food for birds and other animals. But in the Netherlands, insect numbers have declined sharply in recent decades, partly due to the paving of gardens and a lack of nesting opportunities. With an insect hotel, you provide wild bees and other beneficial species with a safe haven.

    Choose a hotel made of natural materials like bamboo, wicker, or wood, without splinters or sharp edges. And make sure it has a roof.

    Hang it up in a sunny, dry spot at least half a metre above the ground.

    Make sure the hotel has a closed back, hangs securely and does not wobble in the wind

    Pay attention to the depth of the holes: vary between 8 and 10 cm for a good balance between males and females. Shallow holes produce more male bees.
