ActionInsulate your roof

Insulate your roof

You lose up to 30% of your heat through a poorly insulated roof. Roof insulation saves energy, increases comfort, and is even more affordable with a subsidy.

Description

What we find interesting You can lose up to 30 percent of your heat through a poorly insulated roof. By insulating your roof, you can save hundreds of euros on your energy costs. Roof insulation provides comfort and climate benefits: you use less gas and therefore emit less CO₂.

3 more reasons to insulate your roof:
  • Increased comfort in your home – No more drafts or large temperature fluctuations: it remains more pleasant in the attic and underneath.
  • Increased property value – Roof insulation improves your home's energy rating and increases its value.
  • Subsidies make it more attractive – You can receive a subsidy through the ISDE scheme. If you use biobased materials such as flax or hemp, you will even receive an additional subsidy.

Steps

  1. 1
Determine your roof type – pitched, flat, or with an accessible attic? This will determine the insulation method.
  2. 2
Get well informed – At Milieu Centraal you can read what is possible, do it yourself or outsource.
  3. 3
Check your subsidy options – You can recoup some of the costs through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency's (RVO.nl) ISDE scheme (https://www.rvo.nl/subsidies-financiering/isde/woningeigenaars). If you use biobased materials, you'll receive an additional subsidy.
  4. 4
Combine insulation measures – Combine roof insulation with, for example, floor insulation to qualify for the higher subsidy amount.
  5. 5
Ask for advice at the Regional Energy Desk or sustainability desk of your municipality. You can often get free help with planning and applying for subsidies.
  6. 6
In Amsterdam, you can apply for a subsidy for roof insulation; here and here.
