Het Grondstoffenstation

Het Grondstoffenstation – Circular hub for materials and community Het Grondstoffenstation is an award-winning, sustainable market pavilion at Afrikaanderplein in Rotterdam. It is designed with reused materials and built to collect, separate, and reuse the market’s waste streams. Inside, wood, paper, cardboard, vegetables, fruit, plastics, and other materials are sorted to enable recycling and reuse. Outside, there is space for school gardens, rainwater harvesting, community gatherings, and free edible leftovers for food banks and local residents. The station also contributes to local employment by involving people from the neighbourhood in its operations.



Why do we like this? We find Het Grondstoffenstation inspiring because it combines waste processing, circular construction, and social meeting spaces into one project that is both sustainable and strengthens the local community.
