Lecture by Auke-Florian Hiemstra: Trash or Treasure?

Plastic seems to have become the new normal in the natural world. Our (marine) waters are severely polluted. The plastic soup is everywhere – in the canals, in the oceans and in the deep sea. Scientist Auke-Florian Hiemstra is investigating how animals, particularly waterbirds, are adapting to a world with so much plastic. He has discovered plastic straws, sweet wrappers, face masks and other rubbish in their nests. But is that really normal? And what does that mean for our ecosystem? Can we still turn the tide?
