Sunflower Walk with WorldPride
August is all about WorldPride Amsterdam. Voedselpark Amsterdam is organising an inspiring walk past food and urban farming projects around the city. Discover green meeting places where food, community and inclusion come together. The event will also highlight the importance of a fair distribution of space and land in the city. The afternoon will conclude with drinks together at De VerbroederIJ. The walk will take place on Wednesday 5 August 2026 at 2.00 pm at OBA, Oosterdokkade 143, Amsterdam. The event is free of charge. Lecture by Auke-Florian Hiemstra: Trash or Treasure?
Plastic seems to have become the new normal in the natural world. Our (marine) waters are severely polluted. The plastic soup is everywhere – in the canals, in the oceans and in the deep sea. Scientist Auke-Florian Hiemstra is investigating how animals, particularly waterbirds, are adapting to a world with so much plastic. He has discovered plastic straws, sweet wrappers, face masks and other rubbish in their nests. But is that really normal? And what does that mean for our ecosystem? Can we still turn the tide? Harvest Kitchens in East
Harvesting, cooking and eating together at the urban farm. Every Monday from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm, from 17 August to 5 October 2026, at the Jeugdland Nature Playground. In the morning, you’ll harvest fresh seasonal vegetables, cook a multi-course dinner under the guidance of a chef, and enjoy a meal together with neighbours. The Monday programme in the Oost district starts at 5.00 pm in the garden, followed by a guided harvest tour at 5.15 pm at Jeugdland (Valentijnkade 131), after which we’ll move to Elixer restaurant (Batjanstraat 1a) at 6.00 pm, with dinner starting at 6.30 pm. The dinner operates on a pay-what-you-can basis. Weaving a flower-covered climbing tower from willow – 8 August
On Saturday 8 August 2026, from 2.00 pm to 4.30 pm, a willow weaving workshop will take place at Tuinpark de Molen in Amsterdam-Noord. The willow weaver – Daan Goppel – will teach you how to weave a climbing frame from willow twigs on which flowers can grow. You’ll take your own climbing frame home with you and receive seeds for edible flowers. The workshop is free, but registration is required due to limited space. A voluntary contribution to the Fonds voor Noord is appreciated. The venue is Tuinpark de Molen, Buitengouw 20, Amsterdam-Noord. Waterwijs: workshop on measuring water quality
Is the water here clean enough to swim in? Why does a green film sometimes form on the water’s surface? Are you curious about how water quality is measured? Then this workshop is for you! During the ‘Waterwijs’ workshop on Thursday 6 August, you’ll discover how water quality is measured at the Marineterrein. Using simple tools and practical methods, you’ll test and observe the water yourself. You’ll learn to recognise pollution and discover how your observations can contribute to research into water quality. Not only will you gain a fresh perspective on water in the city, but you’ll also be given the tools to carry out your own research in your local area. This will give you a better understanding of water quality and make you more knowledgeable about water. In other words: water-savvy! De Standaard DIY bike workshop is an accessible community bike kitchen at De Ceuvel where residents of Amsterdam Noord can learn to repair and maintain their own bikes with the help of a bike mechanic every Friday in July, August, September, October and November 2026 (except 31 July and 7, 14 and 21 August) can learn to repair and maintain their own bikes with the help of a bike mechanic. The workshop is open from 12:00 to 18:00 in the Maakbar on Ceuvelplein (outdoors, under cover). Admission is free; use of the space, tools and guidance is free of charge, and donations are welcome. Join Equal Strategist, Futurum Nobis & Blendn for CleanUp Day in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Saturday, 8 August 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Ganzenhoef metro station, 1103 NB Amsterdam Zuidoost. This community event invites neighbours, families, students, volunteers, and residents to help fight litter and make a positive change. Workshop: Permaculture
Curious to find out how you can make your garden or balcony greener and more edible? During this workshop, you’ll be introduced to the basic principles of permaculture. You’ll learn how to work in harmony with nature and discover how to create a small, natural ecosystem using edible plants, shrubs and trees. Afterwards, you’ll go home with seed trays full of native edible seeds and practical tips to get started yourself. International Day of Clean Air – 7 September 2026
International Day of Clean Air, held annually on 7 September, is a global initiative launched by the United Nations in 2019 to raise awareness of air pollution and the need for action. On this day, campaigns, workshops, conferences and awareness-raising activities are organised worldwide, urging policymakers to adopt stricter environmental measures and sustainable solutions. The theme centres on cooperation and responsibility, and everyone can contribute to cleaner air by, for example, driving less, saving energy and planting trees. Beekeeping Open Days – 11 & 12 July 2026
The Dutch Beekeepers’ Association (NBV) invites everyone to visit the apiary on Saturday 11 and/or Sunday 12 July 2026. During this free national event, beekeepers will introduce visitors to the world of bees and show them exactly what a beekeeper does. They will also give visitors practical tips on how they can help create a better environment for bees, butterflies and other insects. Mini safari through the nettles
Every Sunday during the summer, you can join a guide on a mini safari around the Ceuvel grounds – this time with a nettles theme! We see these plants everywhere; we’d rather not touch them and usually pull them up because we think they’re weeds. But especially for children, on 19 July you can discover the superpowers of this prickly plant! There’s free lemonade and tea, but we recommend ordering a slice of cake or lunch at Café de Ceuvel after the safari. Enjoy and explore the Gijsbrecht van Aemstel Park
Nature guide Rob will take you to the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark. This modernist city park and listed building in Buitenveldert is regarded as a highlight of post-war landscape architecture. The park is mainly planted with native trees and shrubs. Stretching over 2 km, the park forms an ecological corridor between the Amsterdamse Bos and Amstelpark. Together, we’ll see and discover more! The walk will take place on Sunday 19 July 2026 from 11:00 to 12:15. We’ll meet at the gathering point between Willem van Weldammelaan and Van Nijenrodeweg 434. Neighbourhood campsite at IJburg Beach
On July 10-12, we are organizing the Neighborhood Campsite at IJburg Beach for the 3rd time. Following last year's success, residents of IJburg and Zeeburg can join the camping party at IJburg beach during the school holidays. Enjoy all the possibilities on the beach. Bring your own tent; we have plenty of sand pegs. Please bring your own camping and sleeping gear. We will provide food and drinks and various activities for young and old. You can also simply sit back and enjoy the beach or the evening campfire. In addition to the Neighborhood Campsite, IJburg Beach offers various facilities for activities such as surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and rowing. There are also beach bars and a lifeguard station.

Mini Safari: “Join us on a Wild Bee Expedition and discover the mystery of the wild bee”
This Mini Safari will take place on 2 August, with doors opening at 10.50, starting at 11.00 and finishing between 12.00 and 12.30. The safari is aimed at children, young people and their parents or carers, with a recommended age range of 5–14 years, but younger and older children are also welcome. The safari starts at Ceuvel Square; in case of bad weather, we’ll gather under the canopy at the Maakbar. The Lutkemeerpolder as a place to cool off
On warm days, Nieuw-West is the hottest place in Amsterdam. At the same time, no fewer than eight of the city's twelve official cooling spots are located in Nieuw-West. This is not without reason: more and more people are in need of cooling during heatwaves. During this Lutkemeer walk, we will explore why the Lutkemeerpolder is so important as a natural cooling spot. Living soil, trees, ditches, and greenery help cool the surroundings, whereas paving and buildings actually retain heat. We will look at Amsterdam's temperature maps and investigate what they themselves can contribute. The walk is suitable for young and old. Zero Waste Week – 7 to 13 September 2026
Did you know that in the Netherlands, we never eat a quarter of all our food? All that food is grown, processed, transported, chilled and heated. We put a lot of energy into it – energy that contributes to global warming. This makes it all the more important that we waste as little food as possible. To raise awareness of this, we’re organising Waste-Free Week. A week full of fantastic initiatives and enthusiastic responses! Waste-Free Week runs from 7 to 13 September 2026. Of course, you shouldn’t just be waste-free for one week, but ideally all year round. Lutkemeerommetje – The protein transition and local food production in the Lutkemeerpolder
The Lutkemeerpolder, with its fertile clay soil close to the city, offers a unique opportunity to strengthen short, regional food supply chains and bring food production closer to the city once again. Projects tackling food waste are important, but it is just as important to look at the other end of the process: how and where our food is produced. The walk is a short stroll of about 2 km through the Lutkemeerpolder and across the fields of De Boterbloem, with plenty of information along the way. We’ll showcase various urban farming projects and talk about the plans for a food hub. Sunday 2 August 2026, starting at 1.00 pm, meet at De Boterbloem Farm, Lutkemeerweg 262B, Amsterdam. Elixer at the Oosterpark neighbourhood campsite

Herbal walk: The Medicinal Garden at Beatrix Park
The Artsenijhof is home to no fewer than 250 species of medicinal plants, and they are at their best at this time of year. What are they used for, or were they used for? How do you recognise them? Where do they come from? What active ingredients do they contain? And when are they harvested? This walk will cover chicory, clary sage, St John’s wort and wormwood, amongst others. IJburg Rumble, 28 June
On 28 June, the IJburg Flea Market is back. This time, there’ll be more than 80 stalls full of second-hand goods, both at the IJburg shopping centre and on Joris Ivensplein. We believe that stalls and swapping items help to bring people together. By keeping it accessible (entry is free), we want to ensure that lots of people meet up on these days. By getting to know each other better, we’ll keep those connections going even after the event. And, of course, lots of items are looking for a new home. Come and have a browse around the market. Enjoy the music and activities for children. The shopkeepers will be offering special deals and snacks. The market runs from 10.00 to 16.00.
Morning work session at the Amstelpark Botanical Garden
The Heemtuin in Amstelpark is a unique patch of ecologically managed nature within the city, which originated from the ‘Endangered Flora’ exhibition during the 1972 Floriade. The garden consists of a series of small sections representing different parts of the Netherlands, each with its own soil type: from Groningen clay in the north to Limburg loess in the south. This results in an enormous variety of – often rare – plants and flowers within a small area. All of this is lovingly maintained by a small team of gardeners, who could do with a bit of help now and then. As well as enjoying the outdoors, you can learn a lot about ecological gardening and native flora. No gardening experience is required. We’ll meet at 10.00 am at the Glazen Huis in Amstelpark. 4 July clean-up in Amsterdam Zuidoost during Plastic PeukMeuk Day
On 4 July, the Dutch Cleanup Club is organising a litter-picking campaign in Amsterdam Zuidoost as part of Plastic PeukMeuk Day. Through this campaign, the organisation aims to raise awareness of the enormous impact of cigarette butts on nature and the environment. The clean-up is part of the new series of XXX Cleanups: a series of campaigns spread across various districts of Amsterdam, aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier and more pleasant living environment for everyone. The Zuidoost event is already the third in this series and is being organised in collaboration with the City of Amsterdam and the Zuidoost district council. Plastic PeukMeuk Day focuses on one of the most commonly found types of litter: cigarette butts with plastic filters. Many people are unaware that these filters contain microplastics and release harmful substances into the environment. Did you know, for example, that a single cigarette filter can pollute up to 1,000 litres of water? Through this clean-up, the Dutch Cleanup Club aims not only to clear up litter but also to raise awareness among residents and visitors to the city. That is why the organisation is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who would like to help out during the event. Amsterdam as an edible city
What would happen if we no longer viewed food production as something outside the city, but as an integral part of how we design Amsterdam? What if Amsterdam could feed itself? A city where food does not have to come from the other side of the world, but is produced in and around the city. Where empty rooftops, industrial estates and the city’s outskirts make way for food production, residents organise food collectively, and short supply chains ensure fresher food, less transport and greater control over what ends up on our plates. But how realistic is a more food-autonomous city, really? How much space does food require in a city where every square metre is under pressure? And does more local food production actually make us less dependent and more resilient? At the same time, there is a growing realisation that food cannot be taken for granted. Climate change, geopolitical tensions and disruptions in international supply chains highlight just how dependent cities are on a global food system. What does this mean for Amsterdam, and what role can local and regional food networks play in this? On Thursday 2 July at 8.00 pm, researchers and local food initiatives will come together at Pakhuis de Zwijger to discuss the future of food in the city. They’ll be discussing land, distribution, technology, community and the political choices needed to give food a more prominent place in Amsterdam. ‘Composting’ workshop
Do you want to learn how to turn your garden and organic waste into fertile compost? In this workshop, you will learn the basic principles of composting. We will show you various composting methods: the worm hotel, bokashi, and compost piles or bins. You will learn how to set up a good compost pile, what can and cannot go into the compost bin, and what the compost subsequently does to your garden or balcony. Because we use many different working methods, you will learn a lot both practically and theoretically, and be encouraged to get hands-on. You will leave with a good understanding of how composting works and with practical tools to get started yourself. Price: €25, for those on a tight budget: €7.50
Bakkie Buurt: coffee brings people together on Steigereiland Noord
A new and welcoming neighbourhood initiative has been launched on Steigereiland Noord: Bakkie Buurt. It’s an accessible coffee and meeting spot at the Steigereiland Noord Green Community, where neighbours can get together for a chat, a cup of coffee, or simply to spend some time together. Our neighbourhood is home to many different people, but we often only catch a fleeting glimpse of one another. With Bakkie Buurt, the Groene Gemeenschap Steigereiland Noord and Dynamo, together with residents, want to add something special to this: a regular spot where everyone is welcome, young and old, whether new to the neighbourhood or long-time residents of the island. Where and when? The coffee mornings take place on the grounds of the Groene Gemeenschap Steigereiland Noord, on Wednesday mornings from 08:30 to 10:30. No complicated programme, just a cosy setting with a table, chairs, coffee and tea. Bring a neighbour along! Everyone is welcome, and it’s especially nice if you bring someone with you. That way, the network grows naturally.
From (kitchen) herb to colourful cloth
In this workshop, Wildpluk Moos will teach you how to create the most beautiful fabrics using colourful herbs. You can use herbal ink to draw on paper, but you can also use it to dye fabrics. We’ll be working with natural materials such as cotton and wool, and natural dyes. We’ll treat the fabrics using various knotting and wrapping techniques. The end result will be your very own handmade ‘tie-dye’ cloth. Cost: €35 per person (+ 0.80c service charge) Book: BUY YOUR TICKET via Hipsy Participant review: It was a really fun and informative workshop led by Moos with a small but enthusiastic group. After a brief introduction to the theory and some examples, we got to work. The instructions were clear and we were also given a written copy. There was plenty of material and we worked with colours – purple (blue wood) and orange (annatto) – that you wouldn’t find in your own garden or kitchen cupboard. The timing was spot on too; we didn’t have to rush and didn’t get bored – lunch was served during the 60-minute hot dye bath. We each went home with two lovely tie-dye pieces of fabric. The welcome at the Hemkerhof, with herbal tea made from herbs we picked ourselves, a cup of hot soup in between, and picking our own apples and quinces, was also very warm – thank you, Pedro!
The Big Recycling Summer Party at Jeugdland
On 28 June, we’re celebrating THE BIG RECYCLE SUMMER PARTY at Jeugdland! From 1 pm to 5 pm, you can take part in all sorts of free recycling activities for young and old across the whole site. In the afternoon, you can come and cheer on your favourite team at the final of the Recycle Rally Race. The grand finale of the Recycle Rally Race will take place on the tarmac. Four teams from all over Amsterdam will compete against each other for the coveted Recycle Rally Race Cup with their super-fast, self-built recycle racers. Invitation | How to Fund the Transition – Towards a financial ecosystem for the community economy in Amsterdam. On Tuesday 23 June, we are organising an afternoon event at CRCL Park focusing on the commons, financing and the future of the transition in Amsterdam. We are grappling with a central question: what does funding look like when it contributes to communal, local and regenerative practices? Across Amsterdam, we are already seeing many initiatives emerge: energy and food communities, cooperative housing schemes, community land trusts, steward-owned enterprises and new forms of public and collective financing. At the same time, these initiatives often face the same structural challenge: how do you keep this financially viable within existing funding models? During this meeting, we will bring together practice, policy, knowledge and the movement to kick-start and advance this conversation together. What can you expect? We will combine three strands: Analysis: why does the current financial system often fail to align with citizens’ collectives? Practice: what alternative forms of financing and organisation currently exist that are helpful? Exploration: what holds promise and what is needed to strengthen this?
