Cooking with beans
Most of us have a tin of beans or a bag of lentils in the cupboard that we never quite know what to do with. This event is about changing that. Together, we will prepare five simple one-pot dishes starring beans, lentils, and seasonal vegetables, along with fresh condiments. Working in small groups, we'll cook these straightforward recipes and then gather around the table to enjoy what we cooked. Beans & Lentils are delicious, cheap and filling. They can save time in the kitchen and are good for you and good for the planet.

Visible Mending: Winter Jumpers Edition
Visible Mending: Winter Jumpers Edition at De Buurtkringloop: Restore and repair your favourite woollen garments in a visible and creative way. Why hide a repair when you can make it even more beautiful and personal? In this special edition for Climate Week, you’ll learn the technique of wool felting. This is a quick and creative technique for repairing woollen garments. The workshop is led by Gaatjesmakers. The duo Linde and Marieke will briefly explain the basics, after which you’ll get to work on the item you’ve brought along yourself. The workshop includes materials, coffee and tea. Presentation of the Zoöp art project: jewellery made from seeds for a better future
Over the past few weeks, Maryna, a young artist from Ukraine, has been working on a special Zoöp project in collaboration with Mediamatic, the Ukrainian Cultural Institute and De Ceuvel. Inspired by phytoremediation, she is investigating which seeds in Ukraine can aid post-war recovery and is designing biodegradable jewellery using those seeds, which can be planted at the right time to help build a better future. The presentation will take place on Wednesday 21 October from 12:00 to approximately 12:30/13:00 at De Ceuvel. Admission is free and no registration is required. De Ceuvel resident Anke Wijnja will be making toasted sandwiches for those attending.

Climate street
How does water work? And how can you give old clothes a new lease of life? On Wednesday, 4 November, children aged 4 to 12 can explore these questions through fun activities at the Klimaatstraat (Climate Street). It’s a free afternoon packed with activities at the Lichtstraat on the Amstel. Parents are also welcome to join in. **Play, create and discover** Go on a scavenger hunt, customise your clothes or take part in sustainable challenges. There will be activities about water, and you can dance at the children’s disco. There’s plenty to experience and learn about the climate!
Bread from the Lutkemeerpolder
On Sunday, 1 November, at 1:00 pm, the Lutkemeerommetje takes on a special theme: bread from the Lutkemeerpolder. We’ll start with a guided tour of part of the polder, led by Iris Poels, a guide and Amsterdam’s climate mayor. This time, we’ll also tell you about the grain grown here. Miller Roel Gremmer grows grain in the Lutkemeerpolder and then bakes his own bread from it. This gives you a chance to see exactly where our bread comes from: from the fertile clay soil of Amsterdam to grain and, finally, a fresh loaf of bread. This time, we won’t just be looking and listening — we’ll be baking bread ourselves! Bakery De Eenvoud will join us and introduce us to the world of bread, flour and dough. We’ll get hands-on together, and of course there will be an opportunity to taste the results.

Every Monday evening, Café de Ceuvel organises a community dinner with ‘Verdiepende Verhalen’. The evening begins at 18:00 with doors opening; the buffet opens at 18:30 and closes at 20:00. The venue is Café de Ceuvel, Korte Papaverweg 4, Amsterdam. Dining is on a donation basis, with a donation of 5–15 euros encouraged, but everyone is welcome to give what they can spare. Booking is essential and can be made via the website. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm, with food served from large pots and tea from thermos flasks on the table. The community kitchen is intended as a living room where young and old eat and chat together.

This autumn and winter, Café de Ceuvel is organising a series of evenings on the theme of fundamental rights, featuring the Volkskeuken + In-depth Stories. The evenings take place every Monday from November to February, with a hot meal at 6.00 pm followed by an in-depth discussion at 7.30 pm at Café de Ceuvel. The price is on a donation basis and bookings can be made via the website. Each session will focus on a different fundamental right, explained by experts and those with first-hand experience, in an open and welcoming atmosphere that encourages questions and discussion. The Sustainable Commodities and Landscapes Forum will take place in Amsterdam on 3 and 4 November 2026. He’ll start with a bit of theory – and a cup of coffee or tea – after which he’ll take you out into the orchard to show you how it’s done in practice and, of course, to give you a chance to practise pruning. Film Night at Cinema De Vlugt: Soil, Water and Climate Justice
Will you be joining us? On Monday 2 November, we’ll be kicking off Climate Week with a film night focusing on the soil, water and the future of our environment. The evening has an international flavour, and the main language will be English. Voedselpark Amsterdam invites you to a film evening where, through three short films, we’ll explore how the struggle for the fertile Lutkemeerpolder connects with global movements for a healthy and sustainable future. After the screenings, there will be a discussion with artists, researchers and activists, followed by drinks and snacks from the Lutkemeerpolder. The programme starts at 7.30 pm with doors opening, followed by an introduction at 8.00 pm, three short films at 8.10 pm, a discussion at 8.40 pm and, to round off the evening, snacks, drinks and informal conversations from 9.15 pm. On Saturday 14 November, from 11.00 to 17.00, you can pick up the tastiest ingredients for baking pepernoten at Fruittuin van West. You’ll knead the dough yourself and shape it into pepernoten, which are then baked in the oven. You can then eat them straight away or take them home with you. The cost of baking pepernoten is 33.75. Every Friday afternoon, Voedselpark Amsterdam is present in the Lutkemeerpolder. **Catharine Giskes** and/or **Iris Poels** are available to answer questions from students, local residents, organisations and anyone else who is interested. Are you curious about the Lutkemeerpolder, Voedselpark Amsterdam, CSA (*community-supported agriculture*) or organic urban farming? Or would you like to learn more about topics such as short food supply chains, biodiversity and a fair food system in the city? You are very welcome to drop by. We are happy to share our knowledge and show you what the entrepreneurs of Coöperatie Ranunculus and Voedselpark Amsterdam achieve in the polder every day. We always combine these afternoons with a harvesting session. Up to two people can help with harvesting each time. The afternoons are primarily intended for people who want to contribute to the establishment of Voedselpark Amsterdam, help out in the fields at Ranunculus or actively work towards creating a healthy living environment.

Programme When the main programme begins, you will receive a complimentary alcohol-free forest cocktail. We will kick off the evening with a short mini-lecture by a University of Amsterdam (UvA) researcher. We will then screen three Dutch short films, each exploring in a different way how our ideas about nature, progress and well-being shape the world around us. Perken — Daniël van Gurp, 17 min. is playful graduation film *Perken*, Van Gurp turns his attention to lichens and to our human desire to demarcate, organize and keep nature within neat boundaries. In mijn tijd — Katalin Fikkert, 23 min. Millennial Julia moves back in with her baby-boomer father. When an old tree is set to be removed, a generational conflict erupts. In In mijn tijd, Fikkert offers a playful take on climate hypocrisy. Tuinhuis — Finn van den IJssel, 18 min. In an abandoned garden shed, Imme, an entrepreneur in upcycled fashion, and Maud, a philosophy student, unexpectedly meet. Their encounter leads to a seemingly simple yet urgent question: how can we do less? After the films, we will discuss the themes with the filmmakers, the speaker and the audience. This is not an evening filled with apocalyptic scenarios or ready-made solutions, but one that makes room for different perspectives.

Do-it-yourself Festival & Sustainable Home Market
On 8 November 2026, from 12:00 to 16:00, the MAAK HET ZELF festival will take place at De Hallen Passage & Galerie Beeldend Gesproken, Hannie Dankbaarpassage 23, Amsterdam. The festival is a cheerful event where you can take part in free workshops to learn how to make your own sustainable products, such as soft toys from old clothes and sustainable washing powder. There’s something for everyone, whatever your age. There’s also a Sustainable Home Market where, in a relaxed setting, you can talk to various organisations about sustainable living, insulation, energy saving, grants and more. The festival is organised by Combiwel Bellamybuurt, Stichting Motherhood and Stichting ToekomsthuisWG, and is made possible by volunteers and the City of Amsterdam.
Neighbourhood Meeting: Towards a Sustainable Neighbourhood
On Monday 2 November 2026, from 7.30 pm to 10.00 pm, the Amsterdam Eastern Harbour Area Energy Committee is organising a neighbourhood meeting in the Kompaszaal at Loods 6, KNSM-laan 311, Amsterdam. During this meeting, the initial outline of a sustainability plan for the Eastern Port Area will be presented, and residents will discuss the possibilities of making the neighbourhood natural gas-free, generating their own heat and electricity, and sharing electricity with one another. Plants and Climate
There’s no getting round it: our climate is changing rapidly. In this two-day IVN workshop, we will examine the impact of this changing climate on our plants. How are our plants affected by global warming and how do they respond? We will study this in two locations: on the street and in the garden. The workshop will take place on Sunday 11 October 2026 from 12:00 to 14:30 and on Sunday 25 October 2026 from 12:00 to 14:30 at Natuurtuin de Slatuinen, Slatuinenweg 45, Amsterdam. The cost is 10 euros for members and 15 euros for non-members. Maximum of 11 participants. Registration is compulsory via arendwakker3@gmail.com. The Sustainable Christmas Market at De Ceuvel will take place on 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2026, from 1.00 pm to 7.00 pm each day. Visitors can discover sustainable and unique gifts, enjoy mulled wine by the fire and sample homemade vegan pea soup. There will also be some great performances. The market takes place at De Ceuvel, Korte Papaverweg 2–6, 1032 KB Amsterdam. Entry is free.

Course: Plant &Climate: How do plants survive?
Our climate is changing rapidly, and this has consequences for plant life in cities and beyond. In this four-part course, we take a closer look at this subject. How can plants adapt to changing climatic conditions? What green strategies do they develop? We explore how plants have spread across different climate zones around the world and discover some of their sometimes bizarre techniques for adapting and surviving. Each lecture is followed by a walk through the living collection, including the recently renovated large Climate Greenhouse at the Hortus Botanicus. International Day of Climate Action – 24 October 2026
The International Day of Climate Action is held annually on 24 October and is dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against climate change. The day brings together people, organisations and initiatives worldwide to draw attention to the consequences of global warming and the measures needed to mitigate these effects. From local campaigns and educational activities to climate marches and sustainable initiatives, the day offers an opportunity to reflect on the choices that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The day emphasises that climate change is not just an environmental issue, but also affects nature, the economy and society. Organisations use the International Day of Climate Action to share knowledge, highlight solutions and inspire people to take action themselves, such as saving energy, making transport more sustainable and supporting sustainable development.

During the Outdoor Market, you can visit all the initiatives at NoordOogst yourself. Have a chat with the people behind local food production and pick up something delicious to take home. You can visit the initiatives from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Don’t want to miss any of them? Follow the Outdoor Market Route! It starts at the main entrance, by Tuin van Eten and Buitenkans. Take a leisurely stroll around the entire NoordOogst site and discover this special place.
Climate Week
Every year in November, the Netherlands dedicates a full week to climate action. Hundreds of residents, organisations and municipalities organise activities, share initiatives and inspire each other to make sustainable choices. Climate Week is supported by a network of Climate Mayors, Climate Municipalities and Climate Supporters.
Lunch Swap
Especially for residents and professionals in the Zuidas, a swap lunch is being organized during Amsterdam Climate Week. Program Drop by whenever it suits you. You don’t have to stay for the entire program. The program: From 11:15 · Arrival: bring your item and place it on the swap table. 12:00–13:00 · Vegan Lunch & program: presentation by Elif Algu and soapbox pitches by circular entrepreneurs. 13:00–14:00 · The Swap: take something from the swap table and enjoy it with a good cup of coffee. Space is available for 100 people.
Workshop Hapazome
The workshops are open to everyone aged 16 and over who lives near the Oeverlanden or would like to get to know the area. No experience with natural dyes is required. The exhibition is open to everyone. Besides admiring the results of the workshops, it is a great opportunity to visit the Oeverlanden. Workshop dates are Sundays, 20 September, 18 October, 1 November and 8 November, from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. 20 September: making natural dyes and using them on paper 18 October: making natural dyes and using them on textiles 1 November: hapazome, the direct printing of plant pigments onto paper or textiles 8 November: making natural dyes and using them as you wish The exhibition will take place on Saturday, 14 November, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
TRADITIONAL CUISINE
This autumn and winter, Café de Ceuvel is organising a series of evenings on the theme of fundamental rights, featuring the Volkskeuken + In-depth Stories. The evenings take place every Monday from November to February, with a hot meal at 6.00 pm followed by an in-depth discussion at 7.30 pm at Café de Ceuvel. The price is on a donation basis and bookings can be made via the website. Each session will focus on a different fundamental right, explained by experts and those with first-hand experience, in an open and welcoming atmosphere that encourages questions and discussion. The next meeting is on 16 November 2026 from 6.00 pm to 9.30 pm at Café de Ceuvel, Korte Papaverweg 4, 1032 KB Amsterdam.
Circular walk in Vrije Geer Nature Park
Join us on a walk in the Vrije Geer Nature Park. This nature park is the last remaining part of the peat meadow area that once stretched between Amsterdam and Sloten. It’s the height of autumn and winter is on its way. Discover what this means for the plants and animals in this remaining patch of peat meadow in Nieuw-West. Meeting point: South entrance to Vrije Geer Nature Reserve, by the information panel on Vrije Geer, between Ditlaar and Osdorperweg. Cost: Free. A voluntary contribution is appreciated. An autumn walk through the city’s wild natural areas
Accompanied by an IVN guide or a Slatuin volunteer, you’ll discover a hidden green space in the city this Sunday afternoon. During this guided tour, you’ll learn more about the unique flora and fauna of the nature garden in autumn. What mushrooms will we come across? This event is for anyone who’d like to experience a hidden corner of nature (the urban jungle) in the city and is able to walk along a narrow path. Free trees for Amsterdam
On Saturday, 7 November 2026, thousands of young trees will once again be handed out at Tolhuistuin (Tolhuisweg 3). You can choose from two species: Wild Apple and Cornelian Cherry. Both are great for biodiversity, require little maintenance, and also grow well in a pot (great if you don’t have a garden). Bonus: when you collect your tree, you’ll draw a ticket. If there’s a grape on it, you can also take a grapevine home. A prize draw takes place during every time slot, so everyone has an equal chance!
Tidiness is half the battle: on worms and other oddballs, after death
On 27 October 2026, from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm, the event ‘Tidiness is key: on worms and other weirdos, after death’ will take place on the Metabolic boat. Admission is free or by voluntary donation. During the evening, we’ll explore how we, as humans, become part of the ecosystem after death and what it feels like to be prey to other animals. There will be presentations and workshops by, amongst others, Marijn Bax, Susanne Duijvestein, Thijs de Zeeuw, Hermen van de Waal and Sieto Noordhoorn. Visitors are asked to bring a plain cotton, ‘nearly-dead’ T-shirt or jumper for a workshop in which small organisms that help break down our bodies after death will be printed onto the garment.
Hollowing out a pumpkin
As pumpkins aren’t just delicious to eat, but can also be used to make some brilliant creations, you can come and hollow out a pumpkin in our grape greenhouse this weekend between 2 pm and 5 pm. Make something lovely out of it and display it on your windowsill at home. It costs 33.50 to take part; no booking is required. You can also come and carve a pumpkin on 1 November between 2 pm and 5 pm.
Children’s activity: soil creatures and mushrooms
Are you aged between 4 and 12 and have you always wanted to know what’s crawling around on and under the ground? Then come to the Amsterdamse Bos on 1 November 2026 and set off on a discovery tour with the nature guide. The IVN nature guide has trowels, magnifying glasses and identification charts to help you spend an hour searching for centipedes, snails, worms, beetles, woodlice and many more soil creatures that live amongst fallen leaves, under stones and rotting wood, and of course in the soil itself. Perhaps we’ll also see snails eating mushrooms, and you’ll discover whether all mushrooms have a cap and a stem. The activity will take place at the Boswinkel in the Amsterdamse Bos (main entrance to the Amsterdamse Bos; junction of Amstelveenseweg and Van Nijenrodeweg) on 1 November 2026 from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm. Participation is free, but a voluntary donation to IVN Amsterdam would be appreciated. ‘Composting’ Workshop
Would you like to learn how to turn your garden waste and organic waste into fertile compost? In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of composting. We’ll show you various methods of composting: the worm hotel, bokashi, and compost heaps or bins. You’ll learn how to set up a good compost heap, what can and cannot go into the compost bin, and how the compost then benefits your garden or balcony. As we use a wide range of teaching methods, you’ll learn a great deal both practically and theoretically, and be encouraged to try it out for yourself. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how composting works and with practical tips to get started on your own. Sustainable Christmas Market
The Sustainable Christmas Market at De Ceuvel will take place on 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2026, from 1.00 pm to 7.00 pm each day. Visitors can discover sustainable and unique gifts, enjoy mulled wine by the fire and sample homemade vegan pea soup. There will also be some great performances. The market takes place at De Ceuvel, Korte Papaverweg 2–6, 1032 KB Amsterdam. Entry is free. Amsterdam Climate Choir Public rehearsal 3 November
On 3 November, there will be a public rehearsal by the Amsterdam Climate Choir at the Buurtboot on the Workship. Doors open at 7.00 pm; the rehearsal starts at 7.30 pm and finishes at 9.00 pm. You can register via amsterdam@klimaatkoren.nl, but drop-ins are also welcome. Admission is free or by voluntary donation to support the conductor. The choir rehearses protest songs under the direction of conductor Blue Dog (Matthias Konecny) and is part of a national network of climate choirs. Anyone who loves singing and is committed to Mother Earth is welcome, even if they cannot read music.
A winter walk in Beatrix Park. Conifers and other evergreens
Unlike most parks in Amsterdam, Beatrixpark is home to a wealth of conifer species. A walk through an evergreen world of cones, needles, resin and living fossils, which has much more to offer than just Christmas trees and boring hedges. The walk will take place on Sunday 27 December 2026 from 1.00 pm to 2.30 pm in Beatrixpark – Diepenbrockstraat, 1077 VX. Mini safari on Ivy 2: How does this plant stay green all year round? 2
Set off on an adventure at De Ceuvel during the Ceuvel Christmas Market on 20 December. The mini safari starts at 11.00, with doors opening at 10.50, and ends between 12.00 and 12.30. This activity is aimed at children, young people and their parents/carers, with a recommended age range of 5–14 years, but all ages are welcome. The safari will be led by guide Annet Breure from Plantenverhalen and will focus on ivy, an evergreen plant. There’ll be a cosy hot drink, ivy soap suds and a creative activity where you can make your own holly pendant. Participation is free; you can register via a form (https://forms.gle/GTdqxdaKfENHXT5S6), but you’re also welcome to just turn up. Meet at Ceuvel Square; in case of bad weather, we’ll gather under the canopy of the Maakbar. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Mini-safari on willows: What do you know about willows? 2
This mini-safari takes place on 15 November 2026 and is organised on the third Sunday of every month. Doors open at 10.50, it starts at 11.00 and finishes between 12.00 and 12.30. The safari is aimed at children, young people and their parents or carers, with a recommended age range of 5–14 years, but younger and older children are also welcome. The activity is free of charge and you can register via a form (https://forms.gle/TVyvZi2s1v8jmxfj8), but you are also welcome to just turn up. During the safari, you’ll learn how to recognise willow, how it grows and what you can make from it yourself, under the guidance of willow weaver Daan Goppel. We’ll meet at Ceuvel Square; in case of bad weather, we’ll gather under the canopy of the Maakbar. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free lemonade and tea will be provided, and from 12 noon Café de Ceuvel will be open, offering a discount to City Pass holders with a green dot.
Bread from the Lutkemeerpolder – come and bake your own bread!
On Sunday 1 November 2026, from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, the Lutkemeerommetje will have a special theme: bread from the Lutkemeerpolder. We’ll start with a guided tour of part of the polder with our guide, Iris Poels, who’ll also tell us about the grain grown here. Miller Roel Gremmer grows grain in the Lutkemeerpolder and then bakes bread from it himself, so you can see where the bread comes from. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to bake your own bread with De Eenvoud bakery, who’ll introduce you to the world of bread, flour and dough. There will be an opportunity to taste the results. This event is organised in collaboration with the neighbourhood organisation De Schakel. Afterwards, there will be apple pie and time for questions. Julina from School of Softness will be there to work on a tapestry made from wool from the polder, and everyone is welcome to help (please register via https://tally.so/r/LZqD7v). Workshop on the rights of bees Speak out on behalf of the bees at your local council meeting (6 November)
Learn how to use your right to be heard as a citizen to defend the rights of bees. The workshop will take place on 6 November from 13:00 to 16:00 at Metabolic at De Ceuvel in Amsterdam. The workshop will be held in Dutch and admission is free. There are only 20 places available; you can register by emailing Hermen van de Waal at info@bee-foundation.nl. In the workshop, you will learn how to speak on behalf of the bees at your local council meeting, when the best time is to speak, how to write a letter, how to follow up and make an impact, and what you can achieve. The Rights of Nature movement is growing exponentially worldwide, and this workshop is an initiative of the Bee Foundation.
Middag Clean-up at the Park! Will you join us? 4 November
A volunteer afternoon centred around the Zuiverend Park on the Ceuvel, for adults who enjoy getting stuck in outdoors and want to learn more about green spaces, biodiversity, phytoremediation and working together to ensure a healthy living environment. The event will take place on 4 November from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Participation is free, but please register in advance via info@thenatureconnection.nl. During the afternoon, we’ll be working together on the park with activities such as pruning, sowing and taking soil samples, and we’ll round off the afternoon with a drink in the café. The venue is De Ceuvel, Plein, by the wheelbarrows.
